چکیده
Arachidonic acid, the precursor of all bisenoic prostaglandins, is the most common fatty acid present in cellular phospholipids and can be obtained directly from the diet or by desaturation and chain elongation from dietary linoleic acid (C18:2 w-6). Arachidonic acid is liberated from membrane phospholipids by the action of phospholipases, activated by changes in their chemical environment. Simple mechanical stimulation can result in generation of prostaglandins, as shown in many tissues (for review see reference 2). The enzymes that synthesize prostaglandins are present in most organs but some tissues, such as seminal vesicles, kidneys, and lungs, have a greater capacity for prostaglandin synthesis than others. The term "eicosanoids" is applied to all the 20carbon derivatives, whereas "prostanoids" refers only to those with a prostanoic acid skeleton. Once released from the membrane phospholipids, arachidonic acid is metabolized by two enzymes. The cyclooxygenase forms the prostaglandin endoperoxide PGG2. 4 This is converted to PGH, which then isomerizes enzymically or nonenzymically to the stable substances PGE2, PGF and PGD2 (figure 1). A 17carbon hydroxy acid called 12-hydroxy-5,8,10 heptadecatrienoic acid (HHT) is also formed, together with malondialdehyde (MDA). The prostaglandin endoperoxides are also transformed enzymically into

Recent advances in targeting the prostacyclin pathway in pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe disease characterised by increased pulmonary vascular resistance, which leads to restricted pulmonary arterial blood flow and elevated pulmonary arterial pressure. In patients with PAH, pulmonary concentrations of prostacyclin, a prostanoid that targets several receptors including the IP prostacyclin receptor, are reduced. To redress this balanc...
متن کاملNitric oxide and prostacyclin. Divergence of inhibitory effects on monocyte chemotaxis and adhesion to endothelium in vitro.
Monocyte-endothelial interactions are of fundamental importance in determining the movement of monocytes from the blood stream into the vessel wall. This study reports that two endothelium-derived factors, nitric oxide and prostacyclin, alter in vitro monocyte behavior. Nitric oxide (greater than 10(-5) M) inhibited monocyte adhesion to porcine aortic endothelial cell monolayers, whereas prosta...
متن کاملRole of prostacyclin in pulmonary hypertension
Prostacyclin is a powerful cardioprotective hormone released by the endothelium of all blood vessels. Prostacyclin exists in equilibrium with other vasoactive hormones and a disturbance in the balance of these factors leads to cardiovascular disease including pulmonary arterial hypertension. Since it's discovery in the 1970s concerted efforts have been made to make the best therapeutic utility ...
متن کاملPresentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall
Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the substitution of the blood pressure changes in the central arteries such as carotid with the blood pressure changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...
متن کاملEicosanoids in regulation of arterial smooth muscle cell phenotype, proliferative capacity, and cholesterol metabolism.
E icosanoids, particularly prostacyclin (PGI2) and thromboxane A2 (TxA2), have been implicated in the regulation of vascular homeostasis from the point of view of platelet-vessel wall interactions and in the regulation of blood vessel tone and hemostasis (for reviews, see references 1 and 2). However, subsequent investigations have revealed that PGI2 and other eicosanoids may also have an impor...
متن کاملAlveolar Antral Artery: Review of Surgical Techniques Involving this Anatomic Structure
Introduction: The horizontal bony canal in the lateral maxillary wall is the site of anastomosis between the arterial branches from the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAa) and the infraorbital artery. This anatomic structure is known as the ‘alveolar antral artery’. Materials and Methods: We performed a literature review. The anatomic location of the alveolar antral artery in the latera...
